New Architects Melbourne
Various locations, May 2023 – November 2024

New Architects Melbourne (NAM) is a quarterly talk series designed to build networks between local emerging and established architects and allied professionals, including designers from other disciplines, media professionals, construction contractors and craftspeople.

NAM began in Brunswick in April 2011 and has since been led by various curatorial teams comprised of emerging Melbourne architects and architectural graduates. Since August 2023, NAM has partnered with ArchiTeam to facilitate an ongoing and evolving program of guests, hosts and sponsorships.

EmAGN THIS! 99 Spring Street
Melbourne CBD, July 2023

A collaboration between the Australian Institute of Architects’ Emerging Architects and Graduates Network (EmAGN) and Lovell Burton Architecture, the exhibtion invited visitors into an apartment under construction for Open House Melbourne.

Within the apartment’s walls, new timber-framed pods interrupt the dwelling’s panoramic views, curating glimpses of Melbourne’s skyline as it transitions from the leafy south-east through to the dense CBD. Hand-drawn illustrations strung within the apartment’s shell highlighted the subtle shifts in opacity and transparency resulting from these interventions.

Floor plan and window view illustrations by Lucia Amies. Content and curation by Lovell Burton Architecture and Oskar Kazmanli-Liffen.

Inflection Journal Five Year Party
Testing Grounds, November 2018

Founded in 2013, Inflection Journal is the annual student-run journal from the Melbourne School of Design. The internationally distributed publication explores themes relevant to contemporary architectural discourse through the contributions of students, scholars and practitioners from around the world.

A celebration to mark the fifth anniversary of the journal was held at Testing Grounds, a temporary event space for creative practitioners located in Southbank. Organised on behalf of the Melbourne School Design, the event brought together visual artist Meagan Streader, audio-visual artist Trent Crawford, DJs Miranda Warning, DJ Mum and Nat Salih, and caterer Primo Street Pizza.

Excavating Modernism: Stylistic Species, Émigré Architects and the South-Eastern Suburbs
Glen Eira City Council Gallery, Caufield, March 2019

As part of the NGV Melbourne Design Week 2019, an exhibition organised by the Melbourne School of Design explored the narratives of Jewish émigré architects in Glen Eira. Historical materials from university-held and newly acquired archives, along with content sourced from the families of exhibited architects, informed a hybrid installation on the émigré-designed “six-pack” housing that dominates Melbourne’s south-east.

The proliferation of this typology between 1950-1960, due largely to a thriving consumer and car culture, transformed substantial tracts of suburbia. To meet the fast pace of the passerby, Melbourne’s six-pack streetscape adopted qualities of  “automobile architecture” – eye-catching front façades with flashy porte cocheres and ornamental signage. Where émigré architects were concerned, these American influences melded with European ideals of cosmopolitan living, resulting in a pared-back glamour.

Taking cues from American artist Ed Ruscha’s photomontages along Sunset Boulevard, the installation featured rolling streetscape footage of Melbourne’s six-packs as viewed from the car contrasted with slow-paced entrance journeys. The film was complemented by a concertinaed booklet, describing the two-fold experience of Melbourne’s six-packs to be appreciated anew.
